Admission to the Bachelor of Social Work Program
To accommodate students from a range of backgrounds, Booth University College’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program has six points of entry:
- High school direct entry
- Students who are eligible to apply for Admission to Booth UC as either high school, mature or transfer students in their first year of study will declare an interest in the Social Work Program and will begin studies in the pre-BSW program. Students will be eligible to apply to the Bachelor of Social Work Program after completing 21 credit hours of study (including SWK 110), relevant work and volunteer experience.
- Current Booth UC students
- Transfer students
- Students who already have an undergraduate degree
- A 2+2 program for students from Providence University College and Steinbach Bible College
Applicants must meet all Booth University College and program admission requirements. A student who meets the minimum admission requirements is not automatically assured of an offer of admission. Applicants offered admission to the program commence studies in the fall term.
1. Direct entry to the Bachelor of Social Work program for high school students
To apply for direct entry, new graduates* must possess a high school diploma with five full credits (courses) at the Grade 12 level, with a final overall average of 80 percent or higher in English 40S and two other 40S credits from different subject areas. All five credits must be at the A, S, C, G or U level. English must be included in the five courses. (Applicants from outside the province must meet the Manitoba equivalent.)
High grades alone do not guarantee direct entry to the program. Applicants must also complete the social work program admission application, including submitting a resume, a personal statement and two letters of reference. Applicants must also have relevant work or volunteer experience.
*New graduates are those individuals graduating in the current academic year and those who graduated in the previous academic year. Graduates who have been out of high school longer than one year are not eligible for direct entry.
2. High school students who do not meet the criteria for direct entry from high school
If you have completed high school and meet Booth University College’s admission requirements but do not meet the criteria for direct entry, you may indicate on your admission application to Booth UC that the Bachelor of Social Work program is your program of interest. During your first year of studies at Booth University College, you would complete core course requirements and SWK110 Introduction to Social Work. In the winter semester, you would make a formal application to the Bachelor of Social Work program. Applicants must have completed relevant work or volunteer experience.
3. Current Booth University College students
Students currently studying at Booth UC, who have completed 21 credit hours, including SWK110 Introduction to Social Work, by the end of the winter semester may apply for admission to the social work program. Applicants must possess relevant work or volunteer experience. A minimum CGPA of 2.5 and a C+ in SWK110 Introduction to Social Work are required for admission to the program. Applicants complete the application process for admission to the social work Program.
4. Transfer students
If you have already studied at another university, you may apply for admission to Booth University College’s Bachelor of Social Work program as a transfer student. Applicants who possess 21 credit hours of transfer courses by the end of the winter semester may apply for admission to the social work program. Applicants must have relevant work or volunteer experience. A minimum CGPA of 2.5 is required for admission to the program. Applicants apply to Booth UC and the Social Work Program at the same time. Students may transfer a maximum of 60 credit hours to Booth University College. This includes 51 credit hours of liberal arts requirements and 9 credit hours of social work courses. Upon successful completion of the social work admission process, students may be admitted to either the second or third year of studies of the four-year Bachelor of Social Work program.
5. Students who have an undergraduate degree
Applicants require a degree in the social sciences or humanities, or another degree recognized as suitable preparation for social work. Applicants must complete all coursework for the degree by the end of the winter semester. A minimum CGPA of 2.5 on the last 60 credit hours completed for the degree is required for admission to the program. Applicants must possess relevant work or volunteer experience. Applicants who do not meet program admission requirements, who have been out of school for a minimum of two years and who meet admission requirements to Booth UC, and who demonstrate suitability for the profession may be admitted on probation. The progress of students admitted on probation is reviewed upon completion of 18 credit hours. Students enter into the third year of the program.
6. 2+2 Program for Providence University College students and Steinbach Bible College students
Providence University College and Steinbach Bible College students may complete up to 51 approved credit hours of arts and science at their respective institutions prior to admission to Booth University College. Applicants must possess relevant work or volunteer experience. A minimum CGPA of 2.5 is required for admission to the program. Applicants complete the application process for admission to the Bachelor of Social Work program and Booth UC at the same time. Applicants are encouraged to take SWK110 while completing their studies at their respective institutions.

Application Process
Enrollment in the Bachelor of Social Work program is limited and not all qualified applicants are admitted. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Applicants must meet Admission requirements and submit all required admission materials by 4:00 pm by the application deadline.
Step 1: Apply to the Social Work Degree Program
Complete the Booth University College online application
There are a number of steps in the application process. In addition to your application for admission to the social work program, your application package includes a resume, a personal essay, references and an official transcript.
Step 2: Resume
Submit a resume that describes your previous education, work and volunteer experience. Identify which of your employment and volunteer experiences were related to the social or human services. Identify the number of hours spent in each employment and volunteer experience.
Step 3: Personal Statement
In 4-5 academic style, double spaced pages, please answer the following questions:
1. Why do you want to be a Social Worker?
2. What does social justice mean to you? In your response include a social problem you are passionate about and how you would respond to it.
Step 4: Letters of Reference
Your application form will have a section where you will complete the contact information, including email address, for your academic reference, and your work or volunteer reference. If you are a current Booth UC student, the academic reference must come from a faculty member at Booth UC who has taught you.
The volunteer or work reference may come from employment or volunteer supervisors, practicum supervisors, professionals, etc. The referee is qualified to speak to your suitability and potential for undergraduate studies in social work.
For the references to be considered official, the letters of reference must be requested and completed through the online reference request form in your Populi application.
Step 5: Official Transcripts
All applicants must submit official transcripts to the Admissions office at Booth University College from high school for applicants applying from high school. Applicants who have attended university must submit official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. Official transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing institution.
Step 6: Submission of Application
Submit all necessary documents via your Populi application.
Selection process for the Bachelor of Social Work program
Enrollment to Booth University College’s Bachelor of Social Work program is limited. The number of applicants accepted each year varies depending on the number of returning students, number of graduates and available resources within the department. Applicants indicate whether they are applying as a full-time or part-time student. Equal consideration is given to full-time and part-time applications. Applicants indicate if they are applying for study onsite at Booth University College or a combination of distance (online) study and onsite. Currently the program is not fully available in a distance education format.
The following criteria are used in assessing applicants for admission to the Bachelor of Social Work program:
- Submission of a completed social work application by the due date
- CGPA
- Personal statement
- Letters of references – academic, work and volunteer
- Human service work experience / volunteer experience
- Evidence of suitability for the social work profession
- Evidence of emotional maturity and stability
