A 3- or 4-year Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Booth University College provides the skills needed for a wide range of human service positions. It is unlike any other psychology degree program offered in Canada because it addresses practical social, cultural and diversity issues that prepare students for today’s increasingly multicultural workplaces. Program Overview
Psychology is the study of the mind and behaviour. It is the study of people: how they think, react and interact. Studying psychology will help you understand yourself and others. You’ll develop critical thinking and sound analytical skills; effective communication, interpersonal active-listening and intercultural communication skills; and self-understanding. If you are naturally curious and constantly in search of knowledge, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology would be a natural fit.
One of the most popular undergraduate options, psychology is an exciting and interesting major, and one that is also challenging and useful. Psychology has a broad range of applications and offers a number of career prospects, as the skills you will learn can easily transfer into a variety of roles.
Studying at Booth
Our program meets North American standards for undergraduate education, according to the American Psychological Association and Canadian Psychological Association.
Students can choose to study either a *New* 3-year Community Mental Health stream or a 4-year core Psychology degree.
Our program also offers students the opportunity to specialize in applied and/or honours psychology, which involves a series of courses focussing on applying theory through community-based service and experience.
The Psychology program is distinctive in its mandate to serve the community by pursuing community-based partnerships, providing students with experiences that equally prepare them for human service work or graduate school. Your Booth University College experience can also include the opportunity to add in an educational travel experience to enhance your studies.
Learning Objectives:
In addition to the Institutional Learning Outcomes, the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program seeks to develop the following intellectual abilities and skills in its students:
1. Develop an appropriate knowledge base in the discipline of psychology that covers the following areas: (1) sociocultural & diversity issues, (2) human development, (3) learning & information processing, and (4) biological contributions to behaviour. Students will be able to do the following:
- Describe key concepts, principles, and overarching themes in psychology.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of psychology’s content domains.
- Describe applications of psychology (e.g. describe examples of the practical application of psychological principles).
2. Develop skills in the application of scientific inquiry and critical thinking. Students will be able to do the following:
- Use scientific reasoning to interpret psychological phenomena.
- Demonstrate psychological information literacy.
- Demonstrate innovative and integrative thinking and problem-solving.
- Demonstrate interpretation, design, and conduct of basic psychological research.
- Demonstrate incorporation of sociocultural factors in scientific inquiry.
3. Develop ethical and social responsibility in a diverse world. Students will be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate the ability to apply ethical standards to evaluate psychological science and practice.
- Demonstrate the ability to build and enhance interpersonal relationships.
- Describe key values that build community at local, national, and global levels.
4. Develop effective communication skills. Students will be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate effective writing for different purposes.
- Exhibit effective presentation skills.
- Exhibit the ability to interact effectively with others.
5. Develop professionally. Students will be able to do the following:
- Describe how to apply psychological content and skills to career goals.
- Demonstrate self-efficacy and self-regulation.
- Demonstrate project-management skills.
- Exhibit the ability to enhance teamwork capacity
- Describe a meaningful professional direction for life after graduation.
Additionally, the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program at Booth University College seeks to realize the following distinctive learning outcomes:
1. As appropriate to a Christian University College, develop sensitivity to sociocultural, international, and diversity issues. Students will be able to do the following:
- Describe how psychology can be used to understand different perspectives and worldviews, including those of Christianity and other faiths.
- Demonstrate knowledge about how psychology can differ across cultures.
- Exhibit tolerance to different worldviews while also being able to engage in critical dialogue in relation to both a Christian faith and the discipline of psychology.
2. As appropriate to a Christian University College, develop an ability to apply psychological theory in the community. Students will be able to do the following:
- Describe how psychology can be used to enhance social justice and aid marginalized populations in order to further social justice.
- Exhibit the ability to conduct basic research for the betterment of the community.
- Describe how psychological theory can be applied to rectify social problems and inequities.
- Describe the strengths and limitation involved in community-based research.

Students of psychology acquire an incredible array of skills and abilities, so their Bachelor of Arts in Psychology opens the doors to a wide variety of career opportunities, including positions in personnel, labour relations, social services, health services, mental health, corrections and so much more.
