Library Cards

Your student card is your library card and you need to present your card to borrow materials. A semester validation sticker for your card can be obtained at the library. If you don’t already have a student card, you can get one from IT services.

My Library Account

Login to My Library Account from the Library website to see what you have checked out, renew books and videos, view holds and requests, check to see if you have any overdue materials and fines, etc.  You will use your Populi username and Office 365 password

Notifications

The Library will notify students using the email on file.

Library notices would include:

  • items you placed on hold that are ready for pickup
  • courtesy reminder of materials that will be due in two days
  • overdue materials or fines
  • reminder of the last day to return Library materials (i.e. last day of the semester)
Loan Periods
Books, CDs and Kits 3 months – end of the semester
Videos and DVDs 7 days. Maximum of 5 checked out at one time
Reference Books , Current journals Library use only.
Bound Journals 3 days. Maximum of 5 checked out at one time
Course Reserve Material Loan periods are set by instructor and vary:
2 hours, 24 hours, 3 days and 1 week.
Holds

If what you want is signed out, you can place a hold on the item or recall it.  Placing a hold on the item means that it will be held for you when it is returned.  If you need it sooner than when it is due back, you can “recall” the book.

Click on the title of the book and you will see two buttons in the window on the right.

Click either Place Hold or Recall and fill out the form.

You will be notified as soon as the material is returned by the other borrower. Once you are notified, you have 3 days to come in and pick up the item on hold.

Items on reserve cannot be put on hold

Returns
  • Books can be returned to the library or in the Book Return located in front of the library building on 290 Vaughan Street.
  • Return all videos and DVDs to the library as they can be damaged by weather and falling books in the return bin.
  • Book drops are cleared by 8:00 a.m. and overdue fees will be charged accordingly.

End of Semester Returns
If materials are not returned by the final day of the semester, the Library will issue a replacement bill in addition to any fines that may have accrued. Students will not be issued their grades or transcripts and will not be able to re-register at BoothUC until outstanding material has been returned or paid for.

Fines
Books, CDs, DVDs, videos 50¢ per day per item to a max. of $15.00 per item.
Course Reserves 25¢ per hour per item to a max. of $15.00 per item.
  • Patrons with fines over $20.00 lose borrowing privileges until all fines are paid in full.
  • All library cards expire on August 31. Users with outstanding fines will not be allowed to renew their cards until all fines are paid in full.
  • Students with outstanding fines may not be allowed to write final exams, qualify for awards, or graduate until all fines are paid in full. This includes amounts owed to our partner libraries.

Replacement Fees

Sometimes bad things happen to good books! If material is lost or damaged, the Library will charge the patron a replacement fee. There are no exceptions to exempt any library user from this fee.

Books or DVDs will be charged the exact cost for replacing the item + a $10.00 administration fee.

For out-of-print titles, there is a flat fee of $25.00 for trade paperpacks and $55.00 for hardcover titles.

If you locate & purchase the same edition the item in the same condition or better than the lost item, you may bring that in to replace the one that was lost. Often books are available on sites like Amazon, ABH or Bookfinder for less than we would charge.  Staff judgement on the condition of the lost item is final.

These fees may seem high but, in fact, they do not truly reflect the cost to the Library of purchasing another copy and processing it so that it can go on the Library shelves. Many valuable books are no longer in print. The Library would prefer to get all materials back, rather than try to replace them.

Course Reserves

Professors often put course materials “on reserve.” Many of the books listed in your course bibliography will have been placed on reserve. These materials are located behind the circulation desk on the main floor and have a shorter borrowing time. This way, items in high demand can circulate to more students. Community users and visiting students cannot borrow reserve items.

You can use the reserve feature of our online catalogue to see what titles have been placed on reserve by a particular professor.

Interlibrary Loans

Books and periodical articles that are not available at our Library may be requested from other libraries.
Please submit an interlibrary loan request from the library catalogue or use the forms on the library website.

See the full policy.

Reciprocal Borrowing by Students and Employees

Booth UC and CFOT students and employees may borrow materials from participating institutions listed below. Reciprocal borrowing privileges are not extended to guest or community users.. You must present a current Booth or CFOT student card when you use these libraries. Staff will not loan you items without a card.

Library patrons are held accountable for all materials borrowed at these partner libraries. It is the responsibility of the patrons to be familiar with and adhere to the lending policies of each library from which they borrow materials.

Any overdue fines and replacement costs for lost or damaged books will be charged to the patron by the lending library. Students owing fines at these partners will have their accounts frozen with the Registrar. Course registration and transcript will be delayed until all fines are paid.

Carrels

Guidelines for Use

  • Do not leave valuables (wallets, backpacks, computers) unattended in your carrel. The library is not responsible for theft or damage
  • Clearly indicate as such all materials you do not want re-shelved
  • Library policy is that all library books used for more than one day at carrels reserved by students must be checked out. Otherwise, student workers randomly checking the dates of books stored in carrels will re-shelve books which are not checked out.
  • Reference books should not be stored at one’s desk, but be placed after use on library carts for re-shelving.
Group Study Room

There is a study room available in the library for small groups (minimum of three people). Students may book the room up to two hours per day and twice a week. Bookings may be made up to one week in advance. If not not occupied within the first 15 minutes, the room will then be available for anyone to use or book.

With your student ID card, you can book a study room in person at the Circulation Desk or by phone @ 204-924-4858.

Drinks in covered spill-proof containers and foods that won’t disturb others or leave a residue are acceptable in the carpeted areas of the library. Meals should be eaten in the cafe area.
